Money exchange: Shops, bars and restaurants will either take the Brazilian currency - the Real - or credit cards (especially Visa and MasterCard). You can also look for major bank ATM machines that work with flags, such as Cirrus or Plus.
Tipping: It's not common to leave tips, except for the hotel bellboy (R$ 2 ~ 5) and tour guides (R$ 10 ~20). Restaurants and bars will normally add a 10% service charge to the bill and only a small tip is expected for good service.
Transportation: Florianópolis has a reasonably efficient public transportation system. The easiest way to move around for short trips is by taxi. Car rentals are inexpensive and provide the best way to travel around the island.
Electricity: Brazil’s electrical grid operates on a 220v system, so most North American appliances will not work (and might even break down) without an adaptor. Most hotel bathrooms will have adaptors for shavers.
Water: Tap water in Florianópolis is drinkable. Nevertheless, as a precautionary measure, we suggest that you should drink bottled mineral water whenever possible.
